Traveling as a musician..

The holiday season is upon us and that means we are in the busiest travel time of the year. How do you travel safely with your instrument? Here are a few tips:

BY CAR/TAXI
1. Keep the instrument in the back seat, on the floor if possible.
2. Avoid putting it in the trunk while driving so it doesn't move around or when parked to keep it safe from cold weather.
3. If you drive to a restaurant, take the instrument inside with you. Most insurance policies don't cover theft from your car.

BY PLANE
1. Know your airline - regulations constantly change and you might want to do some research before buying a ticket.
2. Consider booking an extra seat. If you have a cello/tuba/bassoon you might have no choice but getting an extra one anyway. It's more pricey but the most secure way to guarantee your instrument will be safe.
3.Choose the most robust and protective case possible.
4. Avoid travelling with other musicians, especially at peak travel times. I know this sounds silly but it will cause less attention and the crew might be more willing to help.
5. For domestic flights most people take a carry-on and take up all the overhead bins. Depending on your airline, pay the $20-50 necessary to have early boarding privileges.
6. Get an accessory, like Stretto, that controls the humidity levels in your case. Don’t get cracks!!
Safe travels
